** At around 7:23, some guy in the crowd yells, “Nice Ass Donna”; forever to be immortilized on tape as The “nice ass Donna” guy.

–With the season of Jerome (8/1 – 8/9) nearly upon us, I thought I might make a little mix and seed it. No biggie, these arent rare recordings or anything. I do prefer many of these versions, and think of them as being well played, and extremely energetic. Jerry at his finest!

–This is just a fun little mix….enjoy….Chris Davis (7/19/05)

–My first Garcia compilation seemed to be popular, so here is another one. This one, of course, is with the blessing of the poo…thanks for the support, my friend… :) If the interest is there, more will follow. Enjoy…Chris Davis…(7/20/05)

6. Its No Use* 6/30/72
7. Roadrunner 2/5/74

*So far as I can tell, this is the first Its no Use. The Jerry Site seems to confirm this…

Without me intending it, this volume became a Garcia and Saunders compilation. Plenty more on the shelf, so many songs yet to cover, but I was just in a jazzy mood. The horns sound great! Look for more in a day or two. Enjoy! Chris Davis (7/21/05)

*There is some slight crackling at various points during Limbo. It is not terribly noticeable, but the headphones do make it more obvious. I added this anyway, because Nicky Hopkins plays his heart out on this one…

–This is by far the most mellow mix so far. Enjoy..Chris Davis (7/22/05)

The Garcia Discs – A Compilation

Selections are taken from The Grateful Dead, Reconstruction, Legion of Mary, JGB & Garcia/Grisman. A week straight of late nights went into this mix and a bit of red wine. Many tracks are continuous even though they are from different shows. Thanks to JBL for the inspiration. And above and beyond thanks to Garcia for showing us the way. This is for the people. Enjoy.

It’s no coincidence that this compilation is dominated by James Booker and, to a lesser extent, Nicky Hopkins, two of the boogie-woogiest piano players the world has ever known. And since eight of the 15 tracks feature one or the other doing songs Jerry only played with them, many of these tracks selected themselves. None of the Booker tracks were played in any other incarnation of Jerry’s side projects. Since there are only three recordings over four nights with Booker, there was no way to get a wide variety of choices.

Of the other songs done by the JGB, only two, Get Out Of My Life Woman and I’ll Take A Melody (both written by Allen Toussaint), were done with any regularity. GOOMLW was an easy choice, taken from Jerry’s 10/4/86 first post-coma performance. There are better recordings of it but the electricity and warmth coming from the audience at this historic show made this one easy. Melody was also an easy selection. A 1980 Ozzie Ahlers song had to be included.

While Stagger Lee is a Garcia/Hunter composition, the story of Stagger Lee (and Billy DeLion) is deeply rooted in the rich tradition of New Orleans music. There are two versions here, one with the Grateful Dead and one from Jerry’s only solo show. Although What A Wonderful World was written by non-Louisianans Bob Thiele and George David Weiss, it was popularized by Louis Armstrong. So it’s inclusion is also necessary. There was no more famous New Orleans musician than Satchmo. The version included here is from Jerry’s 50th birthday.

REMEMBER WOODY – ALLEN WOODY (1956-2000)
This six-disc compilation honors and commemorates bassist Allen Woody and the consistent, exceptionally high level of his work as one of Gov’t Mule’s three co-founders. Allen performed together with Warren Haynes and Matt Abts in that magic-inducing trio of three lead musicians who played what Allen lovingly referred to as “heavy metal blues.”

Many, many thanks are due to those magicians: the tapers. The Remember Woody compilation wouldn’t have been possible without those behind-the-scenes heroes who capture the magic night after night. This special anthology was a near-Herculean challenge given the quality and wealth of material to choose from. Everyone who’s heard the Mule has their own set of favorite songs and preferred versions, and the selections included here won’t necessarily turn up on everyone’s list. But no one will be disappointed by what appears on these discs, because the jaw-dropping talents, chops, humor, heart and genius of Allen – all embraced in that huge, warm, inextinguishable tone — are there on each and every cut. Enjoy! – and remember… — Ken Engel

Neil Young – 1978 to 1989 – A Perfect Echo vol. 2

NEIL YOUNG: A PERFECT ECHO

This is a compilation of soundboard recordings from 1967-2001. The term soundboard is a bit of a misnomer. By soundboard I mean, basically, not an audience recording. Some are true soundboards, while others are FM, TV, ALD, or video-sourced recordings. The recordings were all taken from cdrs or videos that are circulating in the trading community.

Each track was checked out in Cool Edit with headphones, and may have had some cleanup done to remove any odd clicks, hiss, or other sound quality problems. The volume was set on each track so as to have them at similar volumes. Fades were added at the beginnings and ends of each track, so the tracks don’t segue, for the most part. There are a couple of segues where successive songs were taken from the same concert, so it still needs to be burned DAO. Most of the banter between tracks was removed to make room for more tracks.

There are a total of 115 tracks (109 songs, as 6 get repeated). Some years were heavy with available recordings (1976 and 1989 come to mind). I tried to balance the set by not using too many songs from a single show. The entire 8 discs run in, roughly, chronological order.

Originally, I started making this as just a personal compilation from my collection. It took about a month to put together, including the planning of what would be included, the remastering of the tracks, and, finally, the creation of the artwork. At first, I didn’t have a title and was just going to call it “a soundboard archive.” While fixing some soft static in Natural Beauty, the title came to me, when he sang “I heard a perfect echo die…”. I was going to call it “Perfect Echo Die”, but Jim Leonard, our friendly AOTW coordinator, persuaded me to leave off the word “die,” so now we have the title “A Perfect Echo”.

The intent was to make a nice sampling of soundboard recordings from throughout his career. Its sort of like an expanded “Rock ‘n’ Roll Cowboy,” with the intent to keep the sound quality higher and more consistent.
