* Bob Marley

We secured a great spot beside a rail running from the stage to the soundboard area that put us in the DFC sweet spot. Not to mention, there wasn’t anyone to our right and the people to our left were cool and enjoying the music. In other words, they weren’t talking.
I hadn’t heard much of Julian’s material, but I’m a fan of Bob Marley and reggae in general, so I was looking forward to this one. I enjoyed his original songs and he sounds a lot like his dad on the Bob Marley songs. This turned out to be one of my favorite sets of the weekend. It’s bassy, but one of the better recordings of the weekend if only for the lack of crowd talk.
Julian was about 27 minutes late, so unfortunately, his set was cut short. His slot was one hour and the set was 48 minutes. During “Stir It Up,” he got a signal that he had two minutes, so he stopped the song and went into “Get Up, Stand Up” and played a bit past his time. I would have liked to have heard an entire hour, but what I heard was great.

This was another “must see” show for me after seeing the stream of Mavis’ set from Bonnaroo last year. This was a fantastic way to start off the last day of the festival. Mavis’ early Sunday festival sets are like “church.”
She gave a nice tribute to the late Levon Helm following “The Weight” and closed with a track recorded in Muscle Shoals. It was a very inspirational, rockin’ gospel/soul set. Mavis has a great band and she let them jam out while she took a break.
I decided to try something different with this recording. Since there were very few people at this stage, I laid out my beach towel and sat dead center with the mains pointing down at me. Not many people stood in front of me and the recording came out fine.

I wasn’t planning on taping this band, but I knew someone in the crowd might like it. I knew they were from Bowling Green, Ky., and figured I’d check them out. The crowd was really wild and into the set. Now I can say I’ve seen them.
I noticed that even though I was dead center about 50 feet back in the crowd that the vocals were kinda low and it’s noticeable on the recording. It’s worse on some tracks, not a problem on others. Not sure if this was the FOH’s fault or if this is just the band’s typical mix.
I did enjoy Matthew Shultz’s stage antics and humor. The band gave the fans a good show. Thanks to the girl who let me photograph the set list.

* fades out early

I was looking forward to a two-hour UM show after dark following their fantastic 1:15 set during the day at last year’s festival. There were way too many frat boys and sorority girls in the crowd, high fiving and hugging, and paying more attention to each other than the band.
Aside from that, this was a great show and the band looked like they were having a blast. I’m glad they were invited back.
Despite all the goofs in the crowd, the recording came out much better than I expected. Unfortunately the file abruptly stops with 3:47 remaining in the show. I have no idea why this happened, just like I don’t know why it happened last year during the Portugal. the Man set. I don’t recall the batteries dying and I had a 16gb card in the recorder.
I’m still offering it for your enjoyment, but I hate that the last few minutes of the finale are missing. At least you can download the official UM live version and have the full two hours of fun.

enjoy!

Futurebirds were the first band we saw at the Hangout Fest on Saturday. Showtime was 11:15 a.m. and there was a very enthusiastic crowd there. The band looked like they were having a good time, drinking beer and cutting up.
You can hear a bit of wind in this recording, most between songs. I just wish the ‘birds had been given a longer slot.

What a great second stage headliner for the last day of the Hangout Music Fest, the Flips doing “Dark Side of the Moon.” They had some help from Phantogram, an indie pop duo from Saratoga Springs, N.Y. and a Scottish woman dressed in a skin tight gold body suit with gossamer wings.
For this show, I was situated on the left side of the front of the soundboard by some pretty cool people, but with my luck, I had the usual jerks who prefer talking to each other with no respect for the people around them, camp out in front of me. Fortunately, most of the time their discussion isn’t very audible.
Now the bad news. There is some noise during the quieter parts here and there. I originally thought it was wind noise and it might be. Then again, I started experiencing some problems with the R-09 or the mics, not sure which, so it could be related to that. Luckily, it’s not noticeable during the louder tracks. At least the recording is complete.

Running Time: 1:02:59

* B.B. King
I was looking forward to seeing Gary Clark Jr. It was one of my “must see” shows and he lived up to my expectations. The recording is a little rough at times, even through the levels weren’t that hot. I really need to be using the amp with the R-09, but I like to run as light as possible in these situations. That’s not always a good decisions, apparently. There’s a bit of wind noise, but no talkers. We had a nice spot on the center rail. Otherwise, the show is complete and Gary was fantastic. What a hot four piece band. Will see him again.

enjoy!

* Band Introductions

The Alabama Shakes were the first band we saw at the 2012 Hangout Music Fest. They played the second largest stage at the festival and had a huge crowd by showtime. I chose to tape from the left side because I found some friends whom I knew would be listening to the band. Thanks to Zach, Ashley, Emma and Quentin. This was a rocking show, a little bassy, but the vocals are strong.
