April 18, 1980. came the most important moment in the career of Bob Marley: the show that celebrated the independence of Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia) of British colonial rule, achieved after a bloody struggle for liberation waged by ZANU guerrillas. It lasted several years and was one of his hymns to the main song ‘Zimbabwe’, the master Marley. Today circulating versions of which Marley would have succeeded even arms to the rebels, who were persecuted by both the Rhodesian forces and by the then racist regime of South Africa when it became clear that the guerrillas did not surrender, he was made an agreement that would independence to the country (which would become a member of the British Commonwealth of nations) in exchange for the peaceful withdrawal of the British who lived there.The formalization of the treaty would be made in a grand ceremony in which Prince Charles would represent the former British Empire and end with a presentation by Bob Marley and the Wailers.
According to the American Dera Thompson, who was with the Wailers on that day and gave an emotional testimony to the magazine The Beat: “We cried and smiled and everyone in the stadium chanted and sang. It was as if to say, we win, Zimbabwe is ours New! We could not believe it was true. Then there was a salvo of 21 cannon, and we feel it, 21! And that was the greatest moment, the greatest moment of our lives. ”
