Tapers Notes:

With an average age of 70, the performances were sometimes uneven, but Neil Young was a stand out. What was odd was the fact that Neil Young’s stage set up was conceptual on an epic scale with six large Native American tepees placed the full length of the stage, and a burlap-colored backdrop labeled with the words “Seeds of Life,” “Organic” and “Indio, CA.” His set began with a flash of an old Indian chief TV test pattern on the big screens as two women in overalls walked the stage throwing seeds to the floor. The central event in Young’s set was an explosive “Down by the River,” clocking in at over 22 minutes.

The true thanks go not to me, but to the taping community behind whose footsteps I have followed, including those who have perfected the art of stealth recordings, the makers of the stealthy mikes, cords, adapters, and preamps, and those who have graciously shared their recording techniques.

I am merely a mike stand with a credit card and driver’s license.

Lineage: Aud Master > 1st generation cassette > Nakamachi deck > Yamaha CDR burner > CDR > EAC(secure) > ProTools > xACT > FLAC(8)

Here is finally the complete version of this show from a December 2005 transfer from first gen cassettes held by the taper. The master cassettes are gone. A 90-minute version of this show has circulated for some time, but this is 30 minutes longer. In general this is a perfectly fine average quality recording, but just so you know the first two tracks are lower quality than most of the rest. The end of The Losing End and the beginning of second TTN are lesser quality than the middle part of the show. 22 minutes into the second TTN there is 3-minute portion where the volume drops significantly. Normally I’d just raise the volume of something like that, but it really didn’t help much so I just left it as is. After the 3 minute portion the sound improves again. The only thing I did to the recording was clean up some of the cuts and adjust the pitch slightly (it ran a bit fast). Don’t let all of that get in the way though. This is a great show similar to the TTN shows in England a week prior. Historic stuff with some great between song raps and a 35 minute TTN! Thanks go out to the taper for his efforts 33 years ago as well as with the recent transfer.

WOW what an amazing show by Neil and POTR. Super high energy, no assholes to piss Neil off. He was in a great mood and was really into the songs. Initially I was centrally located in the pit cose to the back, but decided to move after a few songs when the yackers and drunks started piping up. I moved pretty much the whole set after that to gradually move away from the noisier people. Overall it sounds great and much less crowd noise than Santa Barbara. I was thrilled to be present for the playing of LA, first time live in 42+ years!!

Band:
Neil Young - vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, piano, pump organ, harmonica
Lukas Nelson - electric guitar, vocals, lead vocals on September Song
Micah Nelson - electric guitar, electric charango, piano, vocals
Corey McCormick - bass, vocals
Anthony Logerfo - drums
Tato Melgar - percussion

As always, NEVER for sale, trade freely, and always support the artists’ commercial endeavors.

Enjoy,

David

My all-time Rock N Roll hero does a show on the beach with Willie’s boys and it was SPECIAL beyond measure! We got to Santa Barbara early to grab some lunch, drove up a down Milpas a couple time when I spy this quaint Mexican restaurant and we found parking close. Not 10 minutes after we get tin line to order food when a black limo van pulls up across the street and in walks Neil and the band. I was literally eating lunch 10 feet from my hero! I got a chance to say hello and tell him about my first time seeing him in 1976, and how his music saved my life more than once. He smiled broadly, said thanks and shook my hand warmly. I was starstruck like a 13 year old kid.

The show was absolutely amazing to say the least, Promise of the Real are dedicated, suprememly talented musicians and everyone could tell they were thrilled to be playing with a legend like Neil Young. Neil was clearly inspired by and playing off and into the bands energy too. We had GA pit tickets and got there early to scope a centralized, sonically pure location. Now remember I was down there in the middle of it and there are a few woots and random talkers and laughers here and there, but doesn’t distract from the enjoyment of the music. No editing done other than to hard limit the nearby clappers and a few close woots. It’s raw and pure so crank it up. I got the entire 14+ minute version of F*!#in’ Up on video and I’ll post that on my YouTube page soon. I’m half tempted to cruise to Vegas tomorrow to see them again and blow off work on Monday.

Band:
Neil Young - vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, piano, pump organ, harmonica
Lukas Nelson - electric guitar, vocals, lead vocals on September Song
Micah Nelson - electric guitar, electric charango, piano, vocals
Corey McCormick - bass, vocals
Anthony Logerfo - drums
Tato Melgar - percussion

Recorded at San Francisco’s Cow Palace one October night in 1978, it spotlights Young’s versatility. The talented and magnetic performer switches easily between playing solo on acoustic guitar or piano on tracks like “Sugar Mountain” and “Comes a Time” and totally rocking out with Crazy Horse on “Cinnamon Girl” and the blustery closer “Like a Hurricane.”

** At around 7:23, some guy in the crowd yells, “Nice Ass Donna”; forever to be immortilized on tape as The “nice ass Donna” guy.

-With the season of Jerome (8/1 - 8/9) nearly upon us, I thought I might make a little mix and seed it. No biggie, these arent rare recordings or anything. I do prefer many of these versions, and think of them as being well played, and extremely energetic. Jerry at his finest!

-This is just a fun little mix….enjoy….Chris Davis (7/19/05)

—-Garcia Compilation (Volume 2)—-

1. Tore Up 11/15/76
2. Train to Cry 5/5/82

7. Sing Me Back Home 6/4/82
8. Positively 4th Street 12/21/79
9. Goodnight Irene* 4/21/82

*with Dr. John on piano

-My first Garcia compilation seemed to be popular, so here is another one. This one, of course, is with the blessing of the poo…thanks for the support, my friend… :) If the interest is there, more will follow. Enjoy…Chris Davis…(7/20/05)

—-Garcia Compilation (Volume 3)—-

5. The Harder They Come 11/28/74
6. Its No Use* 6/30/72
7. Roadrunner 2/5/74

*So far as I can tell, this is the first Its no Use. The Jerry Site seems to confirm this…

Without me intending it, this volume became a Garcia and Saunders compilation. Plenty more on the shelf, so many songs yet to cover, but I was just in a jazzy mood. The horns sound great! Look for more in a day or two. Enjoy! Chris Davis (7/21/05)

—-Garcia Compilation (Volume 4)—-

1. Ill Take a Melody 3/8/80
2. How Sweet It Is 2/12/80

5. Sitting Here in Limbo* 12/19/75
6. Masterpiece 2/29/80
7. Russian Lullabye 1/24/80

*There is some slight crackling at various points during Limbo. It is not terribly noticeable, but the headphones do make it more obvious. I added this anyway, because Nicky Hopkins plays his heart out on this one…

-This is by far the most mellow mix so far. Enjoy..Chris Davis (7/22/05)

—-Garcia Compilation (Volume 5)—-

1. Sweet Sunny South* 12/8/91

14. Jam Into Shady Grove** 3/xx/95
15. Shady Grove** 3/xx/95

*duet, with banjos

-This started as an acoustic Garcia mix. It transformed into a Garcia/Grisman mix. I guess the other acoustic stuff will have to wait for another volume. Enjoy…Chris Davis…(7/23/05)

Neil Young - 1978 to 1989 - A Perfect Echo vol. 2

NEIL YOUNG: A PERFECT ECHO

This is a compilation of soundboard recordings from 1967-2001. The term soundboard is a bit of a misnomer. By soundboard I mean, basically, not an audience recording. Some are true soundboards, while others are FM, TV, ALD, or video-sourced recordings. The recordings were all taken from cdrs or videos that are circulating in the trading community.

Each track was checked out in Cool Edit with headphones, and may have had some cleanup done to remove any odd clicks, hiss, or other sound quality problems. The volume was set on each track so as to have them at similar volumes. Fades were added at the beginnings and ends of each track, so the tracks don’t segue, for the most part. There are a couple of segues where successive songs were taken from the same concert, so it still needs to be burned DAO. Most of the banter between tracks was removed to make room for more tracks.

There are a total of 115 tracks (109 songs, as 6 get repeated). Some years were heavy with available recordings (1976 and 1989 come to mind). I tried to balance the set by not using too many songs from a single show. The entire 8 discs run in, roughly, chronological order.

Originally, I started making this as just a personal compilation from my collection. It took about a month to put together, including the planning of what would be included, the remastering of the tracks, and, finally, the creation of the artwork. At first, I didn’t have a title and was just going to call it “a soundboard archive.” While fixing some soft static in Natural Beauty, the title came to me, when he sang “I heard a perfect echo die…”. I was going to call it “Perfect Echo Die”, but Jim Leonard, our friendly AOTW coordinator, persuaded me to leave off the word “die,” so now we have the title “A Perfect Echo”.

The intent was to make a nice sampling of soundboard recordings from throughout his career. Its sort of like an expanded “Rock ‘n’ Roll Cowboy,” with the intent to keep the sound quality higher and more consistent.
